Kona Dew Plus

The Kona Dew Plus is the third member of the Kona Dew range. It shows various features common to other models in the  range, namely:-

• A Kona 7005 butted aluminium frame with a nicely sloped top tube which gives you greater, safer stand-over clearance and makes the Dew Plus a unisex bike. Mudguard clearance and fittings for racks.
• A triple chainset for maximum flexibility
• A choice of six sizes.

Kona Dew Plus features

The Dew Plus offers several quite significant improvements over the Kona Dew.

Firstly and perhaps most importantly are the brakes. In place of the V-brakes, the Dew Plus has Shimano hydraulic discs, along with the required changes in the shifters and brake levers.

Apart from the greater power, their main advantage is the ability to operate better in dirty, wet conditions, particularly off the road. In these conditions, the braking surfaces are kept drier and cleaner – a useful upgrade if you think these issues could be important to you.

It’s good that Kona have gone straight to hydraulic brakes, rather than the mechanical units chosen by many manufacturers for their entry-level disc brake model. Hydraulic control is much smoother, and modern components are reliable and fairly much maintenance-free.

The rear derailleur is also upgraded to Shimano’s Deore unit, a rather better MTB component for more reliability and smoothness.

The third major upgrade is to an alloy front fork – it should feel somewhat livelier at the front, as well as delivering some weight saving.

All these changes push the price up an extra £150. It’s a bit of a hike, but these are significant upgrades, which make the Dew Plus a much different (and to my mind better) bike than the Dew. If you have the budget, It has a lot to recommend it. Colours – black or green.
