Giro Saros
The Giro Saros helmet is a model that offers road-helmet performance at a price that makes it affordable for the leisure cyclist as well. At around £70 – 90 depending on size and supplier it’s very attractive.
Devotees of cycling helmets (of which I have to say I’m one) would probably insist that no price is too high to pay for head protection – but in the real world price is an important issue for most. However this level of technology at this price looks to be great value.
The styling is good too. Many road helmets display very aggressive lines which many frankly find a bit over the top. The Giro Saros will look equally at home around town as out on the open road.
The construction uses modern in-mould technology, where basically the outer shell is bonded to the expanded polystyrene body of the helmet in a single process. The region around the vents and ribs is reinforced for greater impact resistance, strength and shock absorption.
This extra reinforcement allows large vents to be built into the helmet, along with internal ventilation channels to increase the airflow cooling. This efficient ventilation is one of the aspects most complimented by users in their comments, as is the light weight and comfort.
A small concern quoted by some is that the front vents do not have netting, as some models do, to keep out insects. So watch out for wasps!
The Giro Saros comes in three sizes: Small (51-55cm), Medium (55-59cm) and Large (59-63cm). Fine adjustment is by use of the adhesive pads supplied with the helmet, and finally with Giro’s RocLoc system. This is essentially a dial at the rear of the helmet which tightens the internal straps to a good fit. A bonus is that you can adjust the size to accommodate a hat in the winter without extensive modifications.
There’s a wide range of colours as well, so you can match your helmet to your bike (or your wardrobe…).
The Giro Saros meets CE EN1078 certification, so you can be assured that when properly worn, you get the best protection available.
The Saros is a helmet that will suit a wide variety of cycling pursuits; that’s what it’s designed to do. So whether it’s commuting, casual weekend outings or more serious road riding, this helmet looks to fit the bill.
There’s loads of information together with videos about construction, the RocLoc system, sizing etc on the Giro website.
